Inbox is a marginally functional typeface created using mostly discarded sheets of 8.5" x 11" paper and an old filing cabinet found at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design Graduate Art/Design Studio. (GR&#38;D Lab).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The interest in using crude-oil as a print medium came suddenly and quite unexpectedly. While I was not directly affected by the massive oil spill in the Gulf Coast, I believe the magnitude of this disaster has seeped into my subconscious just as it has done with so many others in so many different fields of activity. With this project I was not out for grand gestures, or emphatic proclamations -- there was plenty of that in the news. To me this was somehow personal. There was something mystical about this substance, an inexplicable force which drew me to want to make contact with it and explore the possibilities, in my own way.

As the oil gushed into the waters off the coast of Louisiana, I was desperately searching for a way to get any amount of crude for my humble art experiment far away in Minnesota. Ironically, I was having no luck in finding any amount smaller than a barrel. It took weeks to finally secure a quart of light sweet crude oil for a price that seemed equivalent to a brick of gold. While the Gulf Coast was receiving unsolicited oil by the thousands of barrel-full on a hourly basis, I was anxiously awaiting a quart of this precious substance with a strange child-like excitement.

When I received the oil I began contemplating all of the ways in which I could use it as a drawing ink or a print medium -- forming elaborate narratives, landscapes or printed propaganda with this subliminally charged medium. But the most logical, natural and admittedly satisfying reaction came in the form of a deconstruction. I rigged the bottle to steadily release oil onto a stack of 8.5 x 11 white computer paper creating a varied print series. Over the course of two months I was able to produce two series based on time - 24 hours and 1 month.

Each print in the series is for sale on a sliding scale according to the amount of crude oil absorbed by the paper -- first print being the most expensive. </description>

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Helium Stop was the first incarnation of the principles of Dead Space in the physical world. Dead Space is a collaborative project that developed during a workshop conducted by Bernard Canniffe, Chair of Graphic Design at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and the Graduate Design Class of 2012. The topic of the workshop focused on social design, design for the common good, and alternative design practices. Participants were pushed to re-examine their understanding and approach to graphic design as a critical discipline and to take part in an active dialogue regarding the role of designers as engaged social agents.

For the primary focus of this collective we were interested in exploring the possibilities of all open public spaces as potential platforms for public art. Through our conversation and research we developed a conviction which saw public art as a powerful tool in creating a sense of community, providing a space for open dialogue, and generally improving the state of all neighborhoods, particularly the ones in distress. In a sense, our work as designers of the Dead Space Project became focused on activation of “dead” spaces. What constitutes a “dead” space is a variable definition, depending on the environment and situation. A dead space can be any open public space which has the potential to be activated by art, but stands utilized only for its intended and specific function. Our purpose then, is to disrupt normal and accepted functions of such spaces and establish a field for interaction, open discussion, and an alternative engagement of citizens with their communal environment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For this installation we used 600 multi-color helium balloons to fill up a glass-enclosed bus stop, eventually allowing all of the balloons to escape into the atmosphere when the project was completed.

Frontier Ads is a Dead Space initiative. This project aims to utilize snow in public spaces as an open platform for alternative communication strategies through ephemeral/ environmentally friendly graffiti . Frontier Ads has taken on a visage of (pseudo) ad agency which specializes in seasonal ad campaigns on snow. In our ads we use natural food dye mixed with water sprayed through a stencil on open and accessible public property.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The purpose of this project is to disrupt normal and accepted functions of public space and establish a platform for alternative engagement of citizens with their communal environment. By adopting the model of an advertising agency this project has also raised a secondary issue which addresses an overwhelming prevalence of commercial information in the public realm in proportion to non-commercial or artistic.

Perfect bound publication &#124; edition of 250
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glitch is an art journal. Thematically, the publication deals with distortion, deviation, glitches, and a general sense of confusion and disconnectedness in all realms of human activity. Philosophically, Glitch operates on the premise that disruption, malfunctions and failure are not only desirable outcomes but are essential elements for the development and understanding of art and design.

Each issue of Glitch is crafted around a theme, with the content either submitted or generated specifically for the given topic. The theme for Glitch3 is Connection Time-Out.

PHASEONE - SUGAR from Vadim Gershman &#38; Ryan Powell on Vimeo

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sugar is a short film which came to life as a collaborative project between Ryan Powell, Vadim Gershman and Andrew Jernigan (Phaseone). The film tells a story of two ex lovers failing to reconnect via text message as one is moving away for good. Sugar depicts a bleak and hyperactive reality delivered as a narrative/visual interpretation of a track titled Sugar by a New York based electronic music producer Phaseone.

Proposal:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Room Therapy: a pleasant evening shoreside.

It is difficult to imagine a more prosaic topic of conversation than the weather. Regardless of the specific content of any such exchange, the weather is an important social tool, a universal code of communication, one that prompts immediate connection, empathy and a sense of a shared experience. Despite a certain palliative camaraderie in the face of adverse conditions, the severity and length of the winter in northern climates creates protracted periods of decreased social activity and isolation. In the absence of persistent human contact the internet is an essential tool for mitigating the effects of solitude by providing a window into the world at large. Although this window presents a seemingly infinite set of avenues for social contact and unique experience, the level of fulfillment derived from such interactions does not transcend the threshold of mere simulation. The parties involved remain positioned in their individual, private space, untouched by warmth of human contact and the unique nature of physical experience.

On February 16th, at Whittier Art Gallery we propose the staging of a collective simulation of a real experience. Room Therapy is a live simulation of a tropical beach set-up within the four walls of the Graduate Art Gallery. The installation includes heat, light, a real-time projection of multiple beaches via live webcam, immersive sound, beach accessories, people and refreshments. The purpose of this experiment is to create a relational space on the site of an institutional and generally solitary environment and to provide a temporary place of respite and warmth in the long winter months in Minneapolis. The installation is open to the public and is free of charge. It begins promptly at 7 pm and ends at 10pm.
